AI as Internet Search?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing how we search the internet. Before, when we had a question, search engines like Google would show us a list of websites that might have the answer. Now, with AI, search engines can give us direct answers without us having to click on any links.

In May 2024, Google introduced a feature called AI Overviews. This tool uses AI to provide quick summaries in response to our questions. For example, if you ask, “Why is the sky blue?” AI Overviews will give you a short explanation right on the search page. This makes finding information faster and easier.

However, there have been some problems. In May 2024, shortly after AI Overviews was introduced, it made mistakes like suggesting people eat glue or rocks, or incorrectly stating that former President Barack Obama is Muslim. These errors caused concern among users. Google responded by making technical changes and limiting the feature’s use for certain topics, especially health-related ones.

Another issue is that AI-generated answers can sometimes be wrong or biased. Since the AI creates content based on patterns it has learned, it might present information that isn’t accurate. This can make it hard for us to know if the information we get is trustworthy.

Additionally, using AI in search engines requires a lot of energy. Some studies suggest that an AI-powered search can use up to 30 times more energy than a regular search. This raises concerns about the environmental impact of AI technology.

Despite these challenges, AI is making internet searches more efficient. By providing quick answers, it saves us time and effort. But it’s important to remember that AI isn’t perfect. We should still be careful and double-check the information we receive to make sure it’s correct.

AI is transforming how we find information online. While it offers many benefits, we need to be aware of its limitations and check their sources of data.
